Description Job Role

HMP Berwyn offers exceptional learning & skill provision, with a focus on rehabilitation, to the men it houses. The curriculum offer supports this process and we are seeking exceptional staff to help us deliver this agenda across a wide range of areas.

As directed by the Deputy Head of Learning and Skills, you will

  • Lead a team of delivery and teaching to staff to deliver high quality, learner focussed education in your curriculum area
  • Manage the day to day running of your curriculum area, ensuring that you meet budget, quality and operational targets
  • Ensure that your curriculum areas meet contractual requirements and standards, in line with agreed policies and procedures
  • Key Accountabilities

    • Plan, lead and develop curriculum areas to ensure compliance with the national curriculum framework, best practice and quality targets
    • Be responsible for specific curriculum areas and take a strategic lead in developing and managing those areas
    • Coordination and management of the delivery team, in partnership with other managers, within the organisation, in line with agreed policies and procedures
    • Provide support, mentoring and development opportunities to direct reports
    • Lead the delivery of learner focussed and employer focussed education provision, within the curriculum area
    • As part of the Senior Management Team, contribute to the organisation’s priorities and lead curriculum development within the curriculum area
    • Support the Quality Lead to design and implement quality assurance processes and support staff to comply with these
    • Teach designated hours as required, with a flexible approach to delivering across curriculum areas, as needed to fulfil contractual requirements
    • Lead staff to ensure the safeguarding of learners
    • Monitor and manage the accuracy of learner records and ensure they are maintained in line with data protection and agreed policies
    • Oversee the timely and accurate completion of documents related to accreditation, funding and compliance
    • Communicate effectively with Novus Cambria colleagues, learners, stakeholders and other departments across the establishment
    • Comply with Health & Safety legislation and prison security requirements
    • Participate in continual professional development activities to ensure skills and qualifications are in line with sector best practice.
  • Management & Leadership

    • Lead manage and develop direct reports to deliver high quality, learner focussed education in the curriculum area
    • To undertake staff management and deployment ensuring all staff are appropriately supported and poor performance addressed with effective use of the PR&D process as required
    • Monitor performance and ensure target setting is implemented appropriately and self-evaluation reflects the organisation’s priorities and outcomes
  • Financial

    • Be responsible for the management, allocation and monitoring of devolved operational and curriculum budgets
    • Oversee day to day budget and make the most effective use of resources
  • Qualifications

    • Hold a minimum L3 qualification in relevant, subject specific area Essential
    • Teaching qualification, minimum PGCE or equivalent Essential
    • Minimum Level 2 qualification in Literacy and Numeracy Essential
    • Assessor qualification (TAQA 3, A1, or equivalent) Desirable
    • Internal Verifier qualification (TAQA 4, V1, or equivalent) Desirable
    • Ability to speak fluent Welsh Desirable
    • Subject to enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check Essential
  • Experience

    • Track record of effective teaching or training experience in subject specialism Essential
    • Track record of efficient administration in relation to accreditation and course requirements Essential
    • Experience of leading and managing staff effectively, preferably in an educational setting, supporting team and personal development Essential
    • Experience of working with learners who present challenging behaviours Desirable
    • Experience of managing projects, setting and achieving targets and working to a performance management framework Desirable
    • Knowledge of curriculum development, at appropriate levels, across more than one subject specialism Essential
