Description Job Role

HMP Berwyn offers exceptional learning & skill provision, with a focus on rehabilitation, to the men it houses. The curriculum offer supports this process and we are seeking exceptional staff to help us deliver this agenda across a wide range of areas.

As directed by the Hub Manager, you will * Provide a range of services in support of the delivery and assessment of Essential Skills Wales, or similar programmes, as part of the Learning and Skills curriculum * Deliver high quality, learner focussed Essential Skills qualifications to meet learner needs

  • Key Accountabilities

    • Deliver lessons designed to underpin the requirements for the delivery of Essential Skills and assess the full range of Essential Skills (literacy, numeracy, digital literacy and employability skills – where appropriate)
    • Teach using a variety of methods, including formal lessons, discussions, practical activities, projects and assignments. Differentiate lesson plans and teaching methods to meet individual learner needs
    • Monitor learners’ progress towards qualifications, provide constructive feedback and help learners to prepare for the Essential Skills Wales qualifications (controlled task and test)
    • Design a suitable learning opportunities for individuals and groups
    • Develop assessment methodology and documentation including learning materials and workbooks
    • Use the required tracking systems to monitor and log candidate progress and attainment
    • Liaise with Awarding Bodies regarding standards, learning materials, candidate registration and certification, etc.
    • Carry out preparation work in anticipation of External Verifier visits
    • Take part in Internal Verification activities as required
    • Work within the agreed Quality Management System and adhere to quality procedures and correct documentation
    • Contribute to the marketing and promotion of relevant courses
    • Provide educational guidance, support and counselling for all learners and act as a personal tutor when required
    • Participate in the marketing, planning, assessment and evaluation of course provision
    • Liaise with tutors from other business areas with regard to resources, curriculum development, learner reports and other related matters
    • Monitor and evaluate learning sessions and participate in teaching observations
    • Complete and produce the agreed deadlines documentation, such as registers, schemes of work, records of work, course review, course analysis documentation, learner reports, absence reports, course files etc.
    • Implement and adhere to quality systems to ensure retention and achievement targets are continually improved in line with agreed policies
    • Ensure that learner records are accurate and are maintained in line with data protection and agreed policies
    • Ensure the safeguarding of learners
    • Comply with Health & Safety legislation and prison security requirements
    • Participate in continual professional development activities to ensure skills and qualifications are in line with sector best practice.

  • Qualifications

    • Degree or equivalent subject specialist qualification Essential
    • Teaching qualification, minimum PGCE, Cert Ed or equivalent Essential
    • Hold QTS or QTLS Desirable
    • Minimum Level 2 qualifications in Literacy and Numeracy Essential
    • Ability to speak fluent Welsh Essential
    • Subject to enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check Essential
  • Experience

    • Proven track record of delivering Essential or Functional Skills in either a prison or education establishment Essential
    • Experience of working with a similar cohort Essential
