Description Job Role

HMP Berwyn offers exceptional learning & skill provision, with a focus on rehabilitation, to the men it houses. The curriculum offer supports this process and we are seeking exceptional staff to help us deliver this agenda across a wide range of areas.

Cover tutors and trainers are sought across a variety of disciplines including, but not limited to:

  • Essential Skills Wales, including Communication and Application of Number
  • Art, Performing Arts and Digital media
  • ICT and IQT
  • Business Admin
  • Employability Skills
  • Construction Industries (e.g. bricklaying, plastering, joinery)
  • Work based and Land based vocational areas (e.g. horticulture, catering, industrial cleaning, customer service, warehousing)
  • Personal and Social development (e.g. healthy living, families)

As directed by the Hub Manager, your role will be to deliver high quality, learner focussed Essential Skills qualifications and/or vocational training to meet learner needs, contractual requirements and Awarding Body standards and in line with policies and procedures.

  • Key Accountabilities

    • Plan, organise, deliver and assess a vocational, competency based curriculum up to Level 3 and/or deliver lessons designed to underpin the requirements for delivery of Essential Skills qualifications.
    • Teach using a variety of methods, including formal lessons, discussions, practical activities, projects and assignments. Differentiate lesson plans and teaching methods to meet individual learner needs
    • Develop, or contribute to, a scheme of work and lesson plans to ensure compliance with best practice and quality targets
    • Prepare up to date and appropriate teaching materials and assessments
    • Work collaboratively with colleagues, to support literacy, numeracy and digital literacy skills within the curriculum area
    • Ensure that learner records are accurate and are maintained in line with data protection and agreed policies
    • Use the required tracking systems to monitor and log candidate progress and attainment
    • Provide timely and accurate completion of documents related to accreditation, funding and compliance
    • Liaise with Awarding Bodies, as required, regarding standards, learning materials, candidate registration and certification, etc.
    • Take part in Internal Verification activities as required
    • Work within the agreed Quality Management System and adhere to quality procedures and correct documentation
    • Support with marketing and promotion of relevant courses
    • Communicate effectively with Novus Cambria colleagues, learners, stakeholders and other departments across the establishment
    • Ensure the safeguarding of learners
    • Comply with Health & Safety legislation and prison security requirements
    • Participate in continual professional development activities to ensure skills and qualifications are in line with sector best practice.

  • Qualifications

    • Hold a minimum L3 qualification in relevant, subject specific area Essential
    • PGCE, or equivalent teaching qualification Desirable
    • Hold at least a level 2 qualification in Literacy and Numeracy Essential
    • Hold appropriate Assessor qualification (TAQA, A1, or equivalent) Essential
    • Hold , or commit to gain within 1 year, an appropriate Internal Verifier qualification (dependent upon course accreditation requirements) Essential
    • Ability to speak fluent Welsh Desirable
    • Subject to enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check Essential
  • Experience

    • Experience of teaching and/or training within subject specific area Essential
    • Experience of a range of delivery and assessment methods within subject areas Essential
    • Industry experience within appropriate vocational sector Essential
    • Experience of working within a prison, further education or training setting Essential
    • Organised and self-motivated with the ability to meet deadlines Essential
